Where Bangalore’s nannies actually are
A nanny is not hired the way a cook or a maid is, and the reason is arithmetic. A cook can do three or four houses in a morning, so she will travel for a good one. A nanny is with one child for most of the day, so a long commute costs her the whole job and she will not take it. In practice your real pool is people who already live within a few kilometres of you, which is why the same salary fills a post in a week in one part of Bangalore and sits unanswered for a month in another.
Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Bellandur and Marathahalli hold most of the city’s nanny work: young dual-income households, small children, and a standard nine-to-seven shape to the day. Supply is close by and posts fill quickly. HSR Layout and Koramangala skew to founder and startup families who more often want early-morning or evening cover than a full day: a narrower ask, so name the window plainly. Indiranagar, Jayanagar and JP Nagar are older, more settled households where live-in is ordinary and the same nanny often stays for years. Hebbal and Electronic City have fewer families competing for the same few nannies, so a fair post there gets answered fast.
School holidays, travel, and what happens to the pay
Bangalore’s school year builds in two long gaps (the April to May summer break and the Dussehra to Christmas run), and a nanny’s job changes shape in both. Families also travel. Settle this before the first holiday rather than during it, because it is the single most common reason a good nanny leaves a household she otherwise liked.
Take her with you and agree the extras in advance: travel, food and where she sleeps, plus a daily rate for the days she is effectively on duty from morning to bedtime. Keep her on full pay while you are away, which is the norm in Bangalore for anything up to a few weeks and is simply cheaper than the alternative. Or agree unpaid leave and accept the likely outcome: she will take other work to cover the month, and you will be hiring again in June.
The maths is worth saying out loud: a month of retainer costs less than re-hiring, and a small child who has bonded with one person pays the rest of that bill themselves. If the holiday means longer hours rather than none (school is shut, so a half-day nanny is suddenly a full-day one), agree the holiday rate now, in writing.
