What actually sets the rate
Hours, how many people live in the house, exactly which tasks are included, whether the role is live-in, and how far the japa maid has to travel to reach you. Two households on the same street can pay very differently and both be fair.
Ask your own street first
An ILO and IIHS study of domestic work in Indian cities found households calibrate to the running rate in their own neighbourhood, and are reluctant to break it, which is why pay clusters tightly inside one society in Kolkata and jumps between them. Your building is a better guide than any city-wide average.
Then put it in writing
Salary, hours, weekly off, paid leave, notice period and festival bonus. Agreeing all six at the start is the single best thing you can do to make the arrangement last.

When to book a japa maid in Kolkata
Kolkata still runs largely on introductions: a helper who already works in your building vouching for a cousin. That works until you are new to the city or the para, and then you are hiring a stranger on someone else's word with nothing written down.
That is most of the reason japa work exists here at all. A generation ago the new mother’s own mother moved in for the confinement. For a great many families in Kolkata today she lives in another state, and the job has to be hired instead.
Which is why the timing catches people out. Japa work runs in fixed blocks of six to twelve weeks, so an experienced japa maid is committed months ahead rather than days. Almost every family starts looking once the baby has arrived and finds the good ones already taken. Start looking in the seventh month and confirm someone in the eighth. That leaves time to speak to two or three people and check references properly, rather than in a panic from a hospital bed.
Two practical things. Book a window, not a date: nobody knows when labour starts, so agree a fortnight either side of the due date and settle what happens if the baby comes early. And post your actual locality (Salt Lake, New Town, Ballygunge, or wherever you are) rather than just “Kolkata”. This is a live-in or near live-in role, so distance decides who can realistically take it.
The language question, in Kolkata specifically
For every other household role this is a convenience. For a japa maid it is not. She is in the house for the hardest six to twelve weeks a family will have, much of it alone with a mother who is exhausted, sore and often frightened. Whether those two can actually talk to each other is the difference between real support and a stranger in the room.
In Kolkata you will find japa maids speaking Bengali, Hindi and English. Say in your post which language the mother is most comfortable in, and treat it as a requirement rather than a preference. It narrows the field, and it should.
If your household speaks something different at home from the wider city, which is common where people have moved for work, say that too. Someone who shares the mother’s first language is worth more to her at three in the morning than an extra year of experience.
